Season's end

I keep hearing a certain word. An innocent sounding word. A quiet little adjective that trips off the tongue too easily. That word is autumnal. I don't have anything against autumn, it's a splendid time of the year, but with every spectacular autumn you have to know that winter is just around the corner and unlike the other three seasons just seems to last forever. I like spring and summer too much and this year's offering of new life and sunshine has skipped past in the blink of an eye. The familiar sights of summer are fading away again. The gatekeepers are gone and the last of the small whites are drinking their last sips. The day feels autumnal.

  1. Oh how pretty! I looked up butterflies of England and I THINK I identified the orange and brown as a gatekeeper...is that right? I can't believe how many butterflies you have in England!

I agree with you about the significance of autumn and am dreading winter, too. Oh well. Maybe it'll be a mild winter.

  2. Yes it's a gatekeeper. Common but I like it. This one is a female. The male has another dark patch on the fore-wings. I was reading that their favourite tipple is from blackberry flowers.

  4. Enjoy the autumn sun and the ripening harvest on the trees and bushes, the colours, the sounds, the smells. Yes, winter lasts a long time but it has its beauties too. (Remind me of that when I'm shivering in a north-easterly!)

  5. Yes, I keep hearing that word too. It feels like it here! I'm glad to see you are out taking photos to help you (and us) remember what warm weather is. :)

  6. I just came home from a long hike in a hot house... a tropical rain forest, that is. And it must be butterfly season, as I must've seen at least a dozen different kinds, but didn't "capture" (with camera) many. So, good ones! Don't talk to me about winter... there's a reason I live where I do. :-D
